El primer salvadoreño y latino en desempeñar un rol profesional en el Servicio de Parques Nacionales (NPS), Meléndez Wright, era un apasionado profundo de la naturaleza y la vida silvestre. Lideró los esfuerzos de conservación de la vida silvestre en el Parque Nacional Yosemite y realizó múltiples estudios. Habla español con fluidez y se desempeñó como traductor para el encargado de la cultura Yotuya Lebrado en Yosemite. A pesar de un trágico accidente que acortó su vida, el legado de Meléndez Wright incluye revolucionar la conservación de la vida silvestre y la sostenibilidad en nuestros Parques Nacionales.

The first Salvadoran and Latino to be in a professional role at the National Park Service (NPS), Meléndez Wright, was deeply passionate about nature and wildlife. He led wildlife conservation efforts at Yosemite National Park, conducting multiple studies. Fluent in Spanish, he served as a translator for culture keeper Yotuya Lebrado in Yosemite. Despite a tragic accident cutting his life short, Meléndez Wright's legacy includes revolutionizing wildlife conservation and sustainability in our National Parks.

La Dra. Ellen Ochoa, nacida el 10 de mayo de 1958 en Los Ángeles, California, es una ingeniera pionera, astronauta y la primera mujer hispana en ir al espacio. Realizó su histórico vuelo espacial en 1993 a bordo del transbordador espacial Discovery. Con un doctorado en ingeniería eléctrica de la Universidad de Stanford, Ochoa ha contribuido significativamente a los sistemas ópticos y la exploración espacial. Registró casi 1.000 horas en el espacio en cuatro misiones. De 2013 a 2018, se desempeñó como Directora del Centro Espacial Johnson de la NASA, convirtiéndose en la primera hispana y la segunda mujer en ocupar el puesto. Ochoa continúa inspirando a las generaciones futuras en los campos STEM.

She made her historic spaceflight in 1993 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. With a doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford University, Ochoa has contributed significantly to optical systems and space exploration. She logged nearly 1,000 hours in space across four missions. From 2013 to 2018, she served as the Director of NASA's Johnson Space Center, becoming the first Hispanic and second female to hold the position. Ochoa continues to inspire future generations in STEM fields.

Macario García se convirtió en el primer ciudadano mexicano en recibir una Medalla de Honor del Congreso luego de sus heroicos esfuerzos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. García luchó valientemente mientras estaba herido para ayudar a sus compañeros soldados mientras servía en Alemania en 1944. Después de regresar a casa, obtuvo la ciudadanía estadounidense, participó activamente en su comunidad y abogó firmemente por los derechos civiles.

Macario García became the first Mexican national to receive a Congressional Medal of Honor following his heroic efforts during World War II. García bravely fought while injured to help his fellow soldiers while serving in Germany in 1944. After returning home, he gained U.S. citizenship, was active in his community, and strongly advocated for civil rights.

Sylvia Méndez, nacida el 7 de junio de 1936 en Santa Ana, California, es una reconocida activista de derechos civiles cuya batalla infantil contra la segregación escolar allanó el camino para la desegregación en todo Estados Unidos. En 1947, el caso histórico Méndez contra Westminster, liderado por sus padres, resultó en el primer fallo de un tribunal federal de Estados Unidos para eliminar la segregación en las escuelas públicas. Este caso sentó las bases para la decisión más famosa de Brown contra la Junta de Educación. Sylvia ha dedicado su vida a educar a otros sobre la importancia de este caso y a abogar por la equidad educativa. Sus esfuerzos le han valido numerosos elogios, incluida la Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad 2011.

In 1947, the landmark case Mendez v. Westminster, led by her parents, resulted in the first U.S. federal court ruling to desegregate public schools. This case laid the groundwork for the more famous Brown v. Board of Education decision. Sylvia has dedicated her life to educating others about the importance of this case and advocating for educational equity. Her efforts have earned her numerous accolades, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom 2011.
