De ascendencia mexicano-irlandesa, dejó una huella significativa en la historia al unirse voluntariamente a sus amigos japoneses estadounidenses en el campo de internamiento de Manzanar durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial a pesar de no siendo él mismo de ascendencia japonesa. Su solidaridad y compasión resaltaron su profundo compromiso con la justicia y la amistad. Después de la guerra, Lazo sirvió en el ejército de los EE. UU. y siguió una carrera en educación y trabajo social.
