Luke Duncan, Jeff Holland and Rebecca Wallis (left to right), instructors in Springdale High School's Engineering and Architecture Academy, secured a STEM grant for $70,734.24 to provide significant updates for the Computer Integrated Manufacturing program of study. The funds will be used to purchase computers, a band saw, hack saw, CNC Milling Machine, drills, 3D printer, drill press, robotic arm kits, VEX IQ and other items for use beginning in the fall of 2021. "We are very excited," said Holland. "This will allow engineering lab updates that have been very needed." Wallis added, "These updates will allow us to meet industry standards." SONORA FIFTH GRADER LAUNCHES JEWELRY BUSINESS Kate Ebey was bored. She had just finished her fourth grade year at Sonora Elementary, a year that was interrupted by COVID-19 in March. She was ready for something new. What did she do? She started her own business. “My mom (Brittany, a teacher at Sonora Elementary) knew someone with Paparazzi Jewelry, so I talked to the company,” says Kate, now a fifth grader. “We had to sign a contract and I wanted to learn how to run my own business. “So, I buy jewelry from Paparazzi and resell it on Facebook. We have a monthly show where we talk about the newest items that are available. My sisters (Rylie, a sixth grader at Sonora Middle School) and Abbey (a second grader at Sonora Elementary) help with the videos but I do most of the business myself.” Handling most of the business includes buying and selling the jewelry, figuring tax on the products, shipping to those who live outside the area, marketing and finances. “I was hesitant when Kate said she wanted to start this business,” says Brittany. “I thought I’d be doing all the work. She has proved me wrong. She does it all. It makes me super proud of her. She will do great things when she gets older. She has an amazing work ethic. She doesn’t read typical elementary books. She reads self-help, factual books that will help her in business. She likes to be around adults so she can learn.” The adult who got her thinking about starting her own business was her dad, who owns a company that helps businesses grow. He had a lawn mowing business when he was 12 years old. “When I was younger I wanted to run my dad’s company when I got old enough so I could earn enough money to one day run for president,” Kate says. “I’ve changed my mind, though, and would like to be a veterinarian with my own clinic.” What has been the hardest part of owning her own business? “Last year when we were out of school and during the summer I would have a show on Facebook Live once a week,” Kate responds. “Once school started that was too hard to do. I was buying and selling jewelry and doing my school work as well. I couldn’t balance it all. “I thought about quitting the business. My dad told me to write down the pros and cons of whether to continue. That’s how I found a solution. Now I am buying less inventory and have a show once a month. It is longer, about an hour long.” Sonora principal Dr. Regina Stewman adds, “Her shows are very entertaining. She is very articulate and has a great personality for the shows.” Are the shows entertaining enough to draw paying customers? “Yes,” she responds. “That’s why we have to handle tax and shipping. Plus, my grandparents and aunts live in Louisiana and buy from me. So do their friends. Originally from Louisiana, Kate named the business Geaux Glam. Amazingly, each piece of jewelry she sells goes for $5. “My jewelry collection has grown,” says Jennifer Worthy, a Sonora Elementary teacher. “I really like Kate’s Facebook posts. She’s always talking about having the best day in class and writes about things she learned at school. That shows she is listening.” Sonora staff and teachers don’t have to wait for the Facebook shows to purchase Kate’s jewelry items. Stewman gave Kate permission to set up a display case in the teachers’ lounge. “Teachers can purchase the jewelry right here at school,” Stewman says. Has the business been profitable so far? “Yes,” says Kate. “We’ve made some money. I am starting to save for a car when I am older and also for cruises when COVID is over. Plus, we use the profit to buy more jewelry. You have to spend more to make more.” It’s easy to guess Kate is very good at math. She also credits being an EAST student with helping her business. “EAST teaches us how to solve problems and how to think outside the box,” Kate says. Obviously, Kate Ebey thinks outside the box. She’s a fifth grade entrepreneur. She and students like her help make Springdale Public Schools #THEChoice.

Don Tyson School of Innovation senior Steicy Lopez has been working with Parson Hills Elementary EAST students to produce ear savers with a 3D printer. Lopez, who first took EAST in seventh grade, and the Parson Hills students presented 100 of the ear savers to Nicole Crawford of the Mercy Foundation to be utilized by health care workers. Lopez said, "In researching this project I read that health care workers and others who wear masks for long periods of time can develop painful problems around their ears and backs of their heads. These ear savers, approved by the National Institute of Health, alleviate that problem by taking pressure off around the mask. It's also good for those who wear glasses because the ear savers keep glasses from fogging while wearing masks." Lopez plans to reach out to other area hospitals and health care units to offer the ear savers. Parson Hills' EAST program, directed by Wade Ward, plans to produce 1,000 ear savers to be given away, some to district employees. Student-led projects that benefit the community are among the reasons Springdale Public Schools are #THEChoice.

Springdale Har-Ber High School became the first school in the United States to test Breezy One, a robot that can disinfect a building as large as Har-Ber in about two hours. District and school administrators watched a demonstration as they consider purchasing the product. Kimberly Corbitt, head of consumer engagement for Build With Robots (the manufacturer) says, "Breezy One uses a disinfectant that kills 99.999 percent of all bacteria, virus and fungi in a building 100 percent of the time. It can be operated by custodial staff members. It is safe in school because it disinfects while no one is in the building. We chose Springdale as our first test in a school because the district is innovative and forward thinking. We were excited to be at Har-Ber High School." Innovative thinking helps make Springdale Public Schools #THEChoice.
